What to Do in Alice Springs
The airport is right out on the outskirts of town, so there is not much to do nearby! But once in Alice Springs proper, there is plenty to keep a visitor entertained. The Desert Park is a great way to experience the outback and its inhabitants, and there are also plenty of walking trails around the city which will put on display some of the area’s wonderful scenery. For a view of the town, try climbing Anzac Hill. There are plenty of museums and art galleries scattered around, including the Museum of Central Australia. The city has all the usual amenities such as a movie theatre, pool, shopping malls and a variety of places to eat.
As with all airports, unattended baggage in the Alice Springs Airport terminal will be treated as a threat and dealt with accordingly. Keep your bags with you at all times! The same applies to comments made about weapons and explosives. Jokes or not, these will be taken seriously and could result in questioning and disrupted travel.
Security screening at Alice Springs takes place before entering the departure lounge. Hand luggage (and any handbags for non-travellers) must be passed through an x-ray machine to be checked for any weapons or explosives. People must pass through a metal detector to check for the same. Some things like shoes, belts and anything containing metal may need to be removed for this check.
There are some items which you may not realise are banned from being taken onboard in hand luggage- these include knitting needles, metal nail files, corkscrews and umbrellas with metal points. If you have walking aids, artificial limbs or medical implants which will set off the detector, please talk to the screening officers.
